Chris Veal is a retired Chief Information Officer of the Florida Department of Health, after a seven-year tenure. He possesses over 42 years of experience in the information technology field. Throughout his decades-long career, he has served in various roles, including software developer, infrastructure engineer, project manager, as well as business development and sales executive.
He has extensive experience with IT services and solutions supporting State and Federal oversight programs, such as WIC, Automated Child Welfare Information Systems, TANF, SNAP, Medicaid, VPK, K-12, Early Steps, Guardian Ad-Litem, and the National School Lunch Program. He was also instrumental in bringing the first artificial intelligence system to the Florida State Government in a production application system.
In addition to his expertise in the health and human services arena, Chris has also served as both a consultant and Information Systems Director for Florida’s Turnpike during the design and implementation of the State’s initial electronic tolling systems (SUNPASS). His experience within the government transportation sector includes work with the Florida Legislature, and the Florida departments of Agriculture, Education, Motor Vehicles, Law Enforcement, State Courts, Corrections, Revenue and Tax, Finance and Administration, and Labor, as well as the U.S. Navy.
Chris’ public service extends beyond state government. He is a decorated veteran, having served six years of active duty in the United States Air Force. His personal interests include golf, motorsport, fishing, scuba diving, surfing, silversmithing, travel, and spending time with his grandchildren.
